Demystifying
Diets for
Autistic Spectrum Disorders |
|
Diet has a profound impact on the symptoms of ASDs (Autistic Spectrum
Disorders). Autism and ADHD are both under the ASD label and both
respond positively to the same approaches. With the new revolution
in the biochemical (biomedical) approach to ASDs, it is known that
there are physical symptoms as well as social, behavioral, and/or
cognitive challenges. Diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, sleep disturbances,
ear infections, aggression, self-injurious behavior, and more can
all be positively impacted when diet is addressed.
Certain foods are turned into chemicals that act like opiates
or drugs on the brain, leading to cognitive and behavioral challenges.
Other foods feed yeast, bad bacteria, and viruses in the gut that
have a direct effect on diarrhea, as well as hyperactivity for
example. The gut is often inflamed, absorption capabilities decreased,
and nutrient reserves low.
When foods have such a large effect on the symptoms of autism,
diet must be addressed in order for other therapies to have a
positive impact. Otherwise, it's like putting a bandaid on a bleeding
artery, it will help to some extent but the root cause of the
bleeding must be addressed.
The biggest part of a doctor, nutritionist, or parent's job is
determining which diet is best for the individual with an ASD.
There are so many diets that the information can be overwhelming
or conflicting. Each month we will profile a different diet for
ASDs, highlight which diets work best for which conditions, and
identify the pitfalls ·

Pre-conceived
Notions: Holistic Nutrition Guidelines to Know Before you
Get Pregnant |
|
As a nutrition consultant who works with children with autism, I
see many ways to help improve the health of children - starting
before the child is even conceived. This article details what I
believe to be the three most important areas to address before getting
pregnant. (Women who are already pregnant are not left out of this
plan. Boosting nutrient reserves and improving digestion can be
done at any time during, before, or after pregnancy. It is only
the process of detoxification that should not be undertaken while
pregnant.)
Scientific evidence and government-compiled data bring to light
the increasing physical stress on women, including those who want
to have children. Consider:
> Approximately 80,000 synthetic chemicals are in use today, only
7% have been fully tested for their effects on human health -
none have been tested for their health effects when they interact
with one another.
> The nutritional values of many crops are dropping due to global
carbon dioxide levels and depleted soil. The standard American
diet is far from what it was a hundred years ago.
> The prevalent use of antibiotics by the medical community and
agricultural industry has loaded our bodies with antibiotics,
resistant strains of bacteria, and yeast overgrowth.
The three most important areas to address before conceiving are:
1. Boosting nutrient reserves
2. Improving digestion and intestinal terrain, and
3. Detoxifying heavy metals and toxins.

Nourishing
the Spiritual Body: The Miracle of a Meal, by Amy Mears |
|
I saw a client this morning who reminded me of the powerful impact
small changes can make in a person life. He was relating to me a
life altering experience that he recently experienced in his efforts
to improve his health and energy.
"What was that?" I asked. "I started eating breakfast." he replied.
I couldn't believe that he wasn't already eating breakfast. With
four small children at home and a full time job running a company
with thirty employees, I figured that if anyone was eating breakfast,
it would be him.
"No, I skipped breakfast for as long as I can remember. It was
just too busy in the morning trying to get all the kids off to
school and myself to work on time. I would just grab a cup of
coffee and go. Additionally, many days at work I wouldn't know
when I might get a break for lunch. It always seemed as if there
was something more important to do."
